Chauffeur (Administrative Clerk) – U.S. Embassy Bujumbura
The U.S. Mission in Burundi is seeking eligible and qualified candidates for the position of Chauffeur (Administrative Clerk) within the Defense Attaché Office (DAO) at the U.S. Embassy in Bujumbura.

Position Summary
The selected candidate will operate and maintain Defense Attaché Office vehicles used to transport senior Defense officials, DAO personnel and official visitors within Burundi and neighboring areas.
The position also involves administrative support to the Defense Attaché Office, including correspondence, airport operations, assistance with customs and immigration procedures, and routine translation and cultural support.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Operating and maintaining DAO vehicles in a safe and professional manner;
- Selecting safe, practical and efficient driving routes;
- Complying with traffic regulations and defensive driving practices;
- Maintaining the cleanliness and serviceability of four vehicles;
- Keeping vehicle, fuel and maintenance records;
- Performing preventive maintenance and minor vehicle repairs;
- Supporting DAO administrative activities and handling official correspondence;
- Assisting with airport operations and official visitors;
- Supporting customs, immigration and other required clearance procedures;
- Providing routine translation and cultural assistance to DAO personnel.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Completion of secondary school is required.
Professional Experience
- Minimum three (3) years of documented chauffeur experience/employment.
Language Requirements
- Limited knowledge of English, including reading, writing and speaking, is required and may be tested;
- Good working knowledge of French or Kirundi, including reading, writing and speaking, is required.
Other Requirements and Skills
Applicants should have:
- Good knowledge of Burundi's driving regulations;
- Knowledge of defensive driving and vehicle security procedures;
- Knowledge of administrative procedures;
- Basic computer skills;
- Knowledge of GPS navigation devices;
- A valid passport for international travel;
- Ability to perform basic preventive vehicle maintenance and minor repairs;
- Completion of defensive driving, vehicle security or antiterrorism driver training, or equivalent training;
- Flexibility, reliability, discipline and punctuality;
- Ability to provide advice on cultural matters;
- At least a Class 4 driver's license;
- Ability to drive both manual and automatic transmission vehicles.
Important Conditions
Selected candidates must be able to obtain and maintain the required security certification or clearance and will be subject to a background investigation. A pre-employment medical examination may also be required.
The selected candidate must be able to begin work within a reasonable period, approximately six weeks after receiving the required authorization and/or clearances.
